Todd Higgins's Letter
Dear Members of our PROUD Deaf & Hard of Hearing GLBT Community:
The day has finally come for me to issue a "special announcement" to each and every one of you, as all of you in our Central Ohio's Deaf and hard of hearing GLBT Community are very dear to me!
In March 2002, I applied for a full-time position in San Francisco, California that would allow me to do what I am passionate about--that is to advocate for Deaf and hard of hearing GLBT individuals' equal rights on a national level. A couple months, I was chosen out of a pool of nine applicants for this unique and challenging position. It was not until today that I formally accepted this position. Quite honestly, this required a lot of soul searching, as I knew that by accepting this position, I would not only leave Ohio, but also each and every one of you. I must admit, it was not an easy decision for me to make, but I truly believe that by working at the Deaf Gay & Lesbian Center (DGLC) in the new San Francisco GLBT Center ( www.sfcenter.org) on Market Street, I would be able to contribute significantly to our always-growing Deaf and hard of
hearing GLBT Community nationally.
As always, I will hold a special place in my heart of hearts for BRAD and each and every one of you!
Fondly,
Todd L. Higgins
Ohio Lesbian Festival has been cancelled for 2002.
A message from the President of the Lesbian Business Association
As many of you know, the Lesbian Business Association (LBA) was first informed of the impending sale of Frontier Ranch during the Festival of 2000.
It was immediately thereafter the Trustees (of the LBA) began a search for a comparable site. Though a gift from the goddess in the spring of 2001 would enable us to have a reprieve for fall, it was apparent the search should continue. So in earnest it did. Alas, when by January of this year, the diligent labors of the board proved fruitless; we began focusing on the possibility of a smaller interim event. After reviewing our last alternative in June, which though quite beautiful was not practical for our needs, the Trustees voted to take the Festival on hiatus for one year.
We are profoundly saddened there will not be a Festival in 2002. Now more than ever, we hoped to provide an opportunity for women to convene in a safe space to share each other's energies and the joy of our artistic heritage. We are however optimistically planning for the future. Within days of the Board's decision in July, I received a telephone call informing me the sale of Frontier Ranch had just fallen through and the facility would be available for future use. Alas, it is too late for this year, but we can envision a return home in 2003, to the place where it all began.
There is however a challenge which must go out to you the women of central Ohio (and surrounding areas). If you wish this festival to happen, you must come forward and give of your time, energy and if you are able, perhaps some financial support. The independent organization, which has been contracted to manage Frontier Ranch, will increase the rates considerably, so we are looking at a tripling of the facility overhead. Secondly, the LBA is now operating on the shoulders of 4 women, who though quite wonderful, have jobs, families and other non-profit commitments, which also occupy their lives. They simply cannot do it alone. The Festival is a complex entity that requires over 20 senior coordinators and at least 200 volunteers. We are enormously grateful to all those who have participated in the past, but during the last 2 years those numbers have begun to dwindle. Our resources internally are limited and so we look to you. Join us now as work to rejuvenate the lifeblood of our festival and indeed, our sense of community.
We hope to have a major organizational meeting in early December. Please consult the web page ( www.ohiolba.org) after September 1 for more information.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
A lesbian couple can legally change last names to a common surname, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled yesterday. The 6-1 decision overturned the ruling of a Butler County magistrate who denied the women's name-change applications because he feared it would appear to sanction same-sex marriage, which is illegal in Ohio. The 12th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his ruling on similar grounds.
Driver License & very important!
Deafies and Hearies
From my past experience, a horror one... when my mother got the driver
License. And she asked them to type "DEAF" and they did. Then few years later,
Her purse was stolen and she lost everything, then three or four months later, her house was break in SIX TIMES! And stole stuffs... what worse, my mother, being single mother, my sister and I was sleeping at that time the thieves broke in and stole everything.... When I woke up and I noticed something looked funny, and realized that some of the stuffs were missing so I woke my mother up. And she was so upset and swore that she will never PUT Deaf in her driver license no more!
So, that is positive for ID and negative for target by thieves who know it... My parent forbid us to go front and sign around, for fear that Hearing driver saw us and knows we're deaf and target us... so we prefer talk at our backyard or inside the house....So, being Deaf is wonderful, but in negative hand, we're targets by thieves.
I wonder if they didn't put name Deaf on card but they have other special code for deaf. Better for u go to driver license and tell them to remove the code. Maybe some people might know what is mean code for deaf, what if you lost or steal & they look at your code, they might know code, they know u are deaf!! Who know!
